Facing a Loss? Stephen Ministry Can Help

Bear one another’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:22

If you are mourning a loss, perhaps you should consider contacting Stephen Ministry.  The loss can be the death of a loved one, losing a job or economic stability or a relationship or your health or simply losing the life you had and will have no more. That’s where Stephen Ministers come in; they walk along side of you with Christ’s love and support. They listen, they care.

In order to be a Stephen Minister you train for 10 weeks and, of course, have the humility to know we cannot see the future or be certain of what is best, but we can consent to God’s grace at work and to use and recognize our own gifts. Stephen Ministers offer the rare gift of being attentive and unafraid of another’s pain; to focus on feelings and reach beneath the superficial and appreciate the rich depths of the care receiver; to simply be there to offer unconditional positive respect; to share faith, hope, and love and let the Holy Spirit work.

If you are in great need and choose to receive the care and concern of the Stephen Minister you have realized that we do not walk this path alone but need the support of our Rockland faith community. The care receiver can share their story, can risk sharing feelings, can accept God’s grace by being willing to change, grow, and heal, to let the Holy Spirit work, and to find a new way knowing that only you can make the choices.

For you who may want a Stephen Minister in the future but are hesitant, rest assured that Stephen Ministers are highly confidential. Anything you say as a care receiver is confidential, even names and identifying circumstances are never mentioned. Only the Stephen Leader and the particular Stephen Minister know the identity of the care receiver.

As Rockland offers the Stephen Ministry into our congregation and community we receive a practical and powerful way to respond to Christ’s commandment: "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 15:12). We also recognize that we have a team of gifted, trained and committed lay caregivers ready to minister to hurting people and to use their gifts in meaningful ministry, growing spiritually as they serve others. And finally, people who are hurting have a compassionate companion—a caring Christian friend who provides emotional and spiritual support. This is a win! win!

If you see yourself as a potential Stephen Minister, ready to join the other 22 Stephen Ministers in our congregation, or if you would like a Stephen Minister to walk with you through a difficult time call Mike Wittman at 720.260.7657 or Dianne Wittman at 720.219.3225. Stephen Ministers say “we are Christ’s presence in our care receiver’s life."

We are blessed to have had a Stephen Ministry program here at Rockland for the past 25 years!
